Road Movies
by John Adams
Three-movement work for violin and piano (1995). The title is, in Adams's own words, 'total whimsy' — suggested by the groove in the piano part, which is entirely in swing mode (second and fourth of every four notes played slightly late). Movement I is a relaxed highway drive; Movement II a solitary meditation in an empty desert landscape; Movement III ('40% Swing') a giddy perpetual-motion machine that demands sustained virtuosity from both players over seven minutes.
