Nocturnes
Three numbered nocturnes composed in Balakirev's late period. No. 1 in B♭ minor (1898) is the most sustained, showing deep Chopinesque influence filtered through a Russian harmonic language. No. 2 in B minor (1901) is widely considered his finest short piano work — visionary and harmonically advanced. No. 3 in D minor (1902) is the most intimate of the three.
