Scherzos
Three scherzos of increasingly large scale. No. 1 in B minor (1856) shows the early influence of Chopin and Liszt in a compact, high-energy form. No. 2 in B♭ minor (1900) is the boldest — massive, orchestral in texture, and rhythmically driven. No. 3 in F♯ major (1901) is the most virtuosically demanding of the three and the longest, running nearly 10 minutes.
