Piano Sonata, Op. 1
by Alban Berg
Berg's only published piano sonata and his official Op.1 — the work he chose as his public debut composition after studying with Schoenberg. A single movement in B minor in compressed sonata form, it occupies an extraordinary position in the literature: deeply rooted in late Romantic harmony (Wagner, Brahms, Schoenberg's early atonal style) yet pushing toward a new chromatic language. One of the most formidable 'first opuses' ever written. Duration approximately 10–12 minutes.
