Twelve character pieces published in 1842 under the subtitle '12 Mélodies caractéristiques en forme d'études.' The collection is more introspective and harmonically adventurous than the later étude collections, ranging through remote keys and poetic subject matter. Each piece carries a literary-emotional title evoking memory, longing, and reverie.
