Chorale Preludes for Organ
Buxtehude's chorale-based organ works span simple harmonisations, ornate chorale fantasias, and extended variation sets on Lutheran hymn tunes, composed for liturgical use at the Marienkirche in Lübeck. They represent the apex of the North German chorale prelude tradition. The Te Deum laudamus (BuxWV 218) is the longest at 13–14 minutes. Bach studied these works during his Lübeck visit of 1705–06.
