Habanera
Habanera for solo piano in D♭ major, composed in October 1885 following Chabrier's five-month journey to Spain in 1882–83. The swaying, syncopated habanera rhythm is treated with Chabrier's characteristic harmonic colour and unexpected modulations. Chabrier orchestrated the piece in 1888, transposing it slightly; the piano original remains the definitive version. The work was a direct influence on Ravel's habanera writing and on Debussy's Soirée dans Grenade.
