Humoresques in Form of a Suite, Op. 17
A suite of five character pieces for piano, Op. 17, composed 1907. The movements — March, Toccata, Pavane with Variations, Pastorale, and Fugue — are cast as a loose suite in the manner of Schumann's piano suites, each with its own character and technical demands. The Toccata and the closing Fugue are particularly demanding; the Pavane with Variations is the most deeply expressive movement. The set displays Dohnányi's range from Baroque-influenced counterpoint to post-Romantic lyricism, and is among his finest contributions to the intermediate-to-advanced piano repertoire.
