Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 5
Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, composed 1897–1898. A large-scale Romantic concerto firmly in the tradition of Brahms, with a commanding piano part, rich orchestral writing, and a lyrical slow movement of great beauty. Dohnányi gave the premiere himself in 1899 and the work became a vehicle for his celebrated career as a concert pianist. It was a standard work in the early 20th-century repertoire and has been revived with growing frequency.
