Piano Quintet No. 1 in C minor, Op. 1
Dohnányi's first published chamber work, composed in 1895 when he was seventeen and still a student at the Budapest Academy under Thomán and Koessler. The quintet was enthusiastically received at its Vienna premiere in 1895 and secured the young composer's international reputation almost overnight: Brahms, who attended the premiere, reportedly expressed admiration and arranged for its publication. The four-movement work is thoroughly post-Brahmsian in language — rich in chromatic counterpoint, rhythmically complex, and structurally assured — yet already shows the warm lyricism and brilliant piano writing that would define Dohnányi's mature style.
