Piano Quintet No. 2 in E-flat minor, Op. 26
Piano Quintet No. 2 in E♭ minor, Op. 26, composed 1914. A more expansive and harmonically adventurous work than the early Op. 1 Quintet, showing the mature Dohnányi in command of large-scale chamber writing. The dark opening key of E♭ minor gives the first movement a brooding intensity that contrasts with the warmth of the slow movement and the brilliance of the finale. An important work in the chamber repertoire that remains somewhat underperformed relative to its quality.
