Six Concert Études for piano, Op. 28, composed 1916. Unlike Chopin's or Liszt's études, Dohnányi's are strongly melodic and harmonically rich, each addressing a specific technical challenge (double thirds, octaves, arpeggios, chromatic runs, and so on) within a fully musical context. The six keys — A minor, D♭ major, E♭ minor, B♭ minor, E major, F minor — provide a complete range of keyboard colours. Among the most musically satisfying études in the Romantic repertoire, combining the rigour of the traditional étude with the expressive warmth of Dohnányi's lyrical gift.
