Variations and Fugue on a Theme of E.G., Op. 4
A set of variations for solo piano on a theme by 'E.G.' (the initials of the dedicatee), composed 1897 and published 1898. The theme is subjected to a series of contrasting variations of increasing complexity, culminating in a formally elaborate fugue — demonstrating the young Dohnányi's command of Brahmsian developmental logic and contrapuntal craft. One of his most ambitious early piano works.
