Figures de résonances (Figures of Resonances) for two pianos
Four pieces for two pianos composed 1970–76 and published 1980. Composed in part as a virtuosic showcase for Dutilleux himself and his wife Geneviève Joy — recordings survive of the composer playing second piano. The title describes the work's central preoccupation: the resonances, overtones, and reflective relationships that arise when two pianos inhabit the same harmonic space simultaneously. A demanding, thoroughly modern work. Duration approximately 15 minutes.
