Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major
by John Field
Piano Concerto No. 1 in E♭ major, composed 1799 and premiered by the composer in London on 7 February 1799. The earliest of Field's seven concertos, composed when he was still under Clementi's tutelage, it already shows the characteristic Field manner: a lyrical, singing piano part, gentle orchestration, and a slow movement of exquisite simplicity. The concerto launched Field's concert career in England before his departure for Russia. Its direct stylistic ancestor is the Clementi concerto, but the lyricism and melodic gift look forward entirely to the Romantic era.
