Piano Concerto No. 5 in C major, 'L'Incendie par l'Orage'
by John Field
Piano Concerto No. 5 in C major (H. 39), composed c.1817, nicknamed 'L'Incendie par l'Orage' (The Fire in the Storm). The most programmatic of Field's concertos, with the finale depicting a dramatic storm. Field's shift to C major marks a change of character from the pastoral A♭ and E♭ works: the C major concertos are more public and brilliant, with brighter orchestration. The dramatic finale earned the work its nickname and made it one of Field's most popular concertos in his lifetime.
