Piano Concerto No. 7 in C minor
by John Field
Piano Concerto No. 7 in C minor (H. 58), composed c.1832 and the last of Field's seven concertos. Written late in his life, during a period of declining health, the Seventh has a darker and more melancholic character than the earlier works. The minor key — unusual in Field's concertos — gives it a brooding intensity, and the slow movement is among the most heartfelt of his orchestral writing. A fitting farewell to the concerto genre that Field had shaped more than any other composer of his generation.
