Piano Quintet in A-flat major

by John Field

Field's Piano Quintet in A♭ major for piano and string quartet — his most substantial chamber work and the only one to have entered the regular repertoire. The A♭ major key is characteristic of Field's most lyrical and pastoral manner. The work combines the gentle lyricism of the nocturnes with the structural requirements of chamber music, producing one of the most warmly beautiful of all early Romantic piano quintets. It has been revived with growing frequency alongside the broader rediscovery of Field's output.
