Piano Sonata No. 4 in B major
by John Field
Field's fourth and final piano sonata, in B major — one of his most personal-sounding works. Beyond the Op. 1 set and in a more mature and lyrical voice, this sonata bridges the world of the Classical keyboard sonata and the Romantic character piece. The B major tonality gives it an unusual warmth and luminosity. Less formally strict than the Op. 1 sonatas, it anticipates the free melodic writing of the nocturnes. An underappreciated gem of the early Romantic piano repertoire.
