Three Sonatas, Op. 1
by John Field
Field's Op. 1, three piano sonatas dedicated to his teacher Muzio Clementi and published in London in 1801. The three sonatas — in E♭ major, A major, and C minor — are Classical in form and style, reflecting Clementi's influence and the conventions of the late 18th-century keyboard sonata. Though they predate the mature Field of the nocturnes and concertos, they are accomplished works showing an elegant melodic gift, confident formal command, and idiomatic keyboard writing. The C minor sonata is the most dramatic; the A major the most graceful.
