Il primo libro delle fantasie a quattro

by Girolamo Frescobaldi

Published 1608
Works 12

Twelve fantasies for four voices in open score (partitura), published in Milan in 1608 — Frescobaldi's first keyboard publication (F 6.01–6.12). Written in a strict contrapuntal style derived from the Ferrarese tradition of his teacher Luzzaschi, the fantasies are organised by the number of subjects (one through five) and by mode. They represent the most rigorous contrapuntal writing of Frescobaldi's career: dense, learned, and formally disciplined. Although written in partitura for multiple voices, they are equally suited to performance on a single keyboard. Bach studied Frescobaldi's counterpoint directly from these and the Fiori musicali. Freely available on IMSLP.
