Fiori musicali

by Girolamo Frescobaldi

Composed 1634–1635
Published 1635
Works 17

Frescobaldi's most celebrated work, published in Venice in 1635 under the full title Fiori musicali di diverse compositioni, toccate, kyrie, canzoni, capricci, e recercari, in partitura (F 12.01–12.47). It contains three complete organ masses — Messa della Domenica, Messa delli Apostoli, and Messa della Madonna — followed by two secular capriccios (Bergamasca and Capriccio sopra la Girolmeta). Each mass provides organ music for the Introit, Kyrie alternatim, Gradual canzona, Offertory ricercar, Elevation toccata, and Communion canzona. Johann Sebastian Bach copied the collection in 1714 and used it in Weimar. Its ricercars were included in Johann Joseph Fux's Gradus ad parnassum (1725) as models of strict counterpoint. One of the most influential collections in European keyboard history. Freely available on IMSLP.
