Recercari et canzoni franzese, Libro I

by Girolamo Frescobaldi

Published 1615
Works 15

Ten ricercars and five canzonas in open score (partitura), published in Rome in 1615 and reprinted in 1618 (F 9.01–9.15). The ricercars represent Frescobaldi's most austere contrapuntal achievement for keyboard: all are single-subject works exploring systematic contrapuntal techniques (inversion, augmentation, diminution, stretto) in the tradition inherited from Luzzaschi and the Ferrarese school. The five canzonas franzese (French-style canzonas) offer lighter, more danceable counterpoint with more varied rhythmic texture. Frescobaldi's preface describes the pieces as aimed at \"players who exercise in the noble contrapuntal art.\" Freely available on IMSLP.
