Seventeen piano transcriptions of Norwegian fiddle dances (slåtter) notated from the playing of Hardanger fiddler Knut Dale. Grieg's most harmonically avant-garde piano works, with modal scales, unresolved dissonances, and asymmetric rhythms. Bartók cited them as a forerunner of ethnographic composition.
