Thirty progressive études for piano, Op. 46, composed 1844 alongside Op. 45. Published in the same year, they were intended as slightly easier than Op. 45 in overall difficulty, though the progressive ordering means the later études reach comparable technical demands. Like Op. 45, each study combines a technical focus with a fully musical character — Heller's overriding principle was that technical and musical development could never be separated. The 30 studies range from simple melodic pieces with light accompaniment to more demanding works requiring independence of voices and subtle pedal work. Along with Op. 45 and Op. 47, they form the core of Heller's educational piano output and the foundation of his enduring pedagogical reputation.
