Subtitled \"Studies in Counterpoint, Tonal Organization and Piano Playing\" (1942). A Praeludium, twelve three-voice fugues in all tonal centres (ordered according to Hindemith's Series 1: C–G–F–A–E–E♭–A♭–D–B♭–D♭–B–F♯), eleven interludes linking adjacent fugues, and a Postludium that is the exact retrograde inversion of the Praeludium. Widely regarded as the 20th century's most significant response to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and The Art of Fugue. First performed 1943, Chicago. Still under copyright; not available on IMSLP.
