Piano Sonata No. 1
Five-movement sonata inspired by Hölderlin's poem \"Der Main,\" depicting the journey of Hindemith's home river from the Bavarian highlands to the Rhine. The most expansive of the three 1936 sonatas (~27 min.), it balances Romantic poetic impulse with contrapuntal rigour: a central fugato movement (IV) leads to a granitic double fugue finale. Pianist Walter Gieseking, who saw the manuscript, called it the finest of the three. Still under copyright (Schott Music); not available on IMSLP.
