Capriccio 'Vzdor' (Defiance) for Piano Left Hand and Wind Ensemble, JW 7/12
by Leoš Janáček
Five-movement work for piano left hand and wind ensemble (flute/piccolo, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, tenor tuba) composed 1926 for the Czech one-armed pianist Otakar Hollmann, who had lost his right arm in World War I. The title 'Vzdor' (Defiance) reflects both the challenge to physical limitation and Janáček's characteristic combative spirit. Five movements: Allegro, Adagio, Allegretto, Andante, Allegro.
