Song cycle of 22 songs for tenor, contralto, three female voices (in Nos. 9–11), and piano, composed 1917–19 and revised 1920. A poem cycle originally published anonymously (later attributed to Ozef Kalda) about a young farmer who abandons his family and homeland for a Romani woman. The piano writing is demanding and vivid throughout — it is not merely an accompaniment but a full dramatic partner. One of Janáček's masterpieces. Duration approximately 35–40 minutes.
