In the Mists (V mlhách), JW 8/21
by Leoš Janáček
Four-movement cycle for solo piano composed 1912. Janáček's most inward and reflective major piano work — the title itself suggests obscured outlines, memory half-recovered. The four movements (Andante, Molto adagio, Andantino, Presto) range from gentle introspection to the explosive outpouring of the final Presto. The fourth movement presents a formidable technical challenge with its torrential figuration. One of the pinnacles of early 20th-century piano literature.
