Monument – Selbstporträt – Bewegung
Three pieces for two pianos, composed in 1976 and first performed by Alfons and Aloys Kontarsky in Hamburg the same year. The triptych presents three contrasting stances: Monument is massive, static, and block-like — both pianos locked in dense, immovable chords; Selbstporträt mit Reich und Riley (und Chopin ist auch dabei) (Self-Portrait with Reich and Riley, and Chopin is also there) is a fast, mercurial study in interlocking pulsation strongly influenced by American minimalism, with Chopin allusions embedded in the figuration; Bewegung (Motion) is a swirling, relentless quasi-perpetuum-mobile in irregular subdivisions. The work was composed in the productive period between Le Grand Macabre and the two short harpsichord pieces of 1978. Published by Schott Music, 1976. NOTE: Non-public domain. Publisher: Schott Music. Not available on IMSLP.
