Four rhythmic études composed 1949–1950. Mode de valeurs et d'intensités systematically serialised pitch, duration, dynamics, and attack — one of the most radical pieces of its era and a direct catalyst for Boulez, Stockhausen, and total serialism. The two Île de feu études draw on Papuan ritual music.
