Grande Sonate in E major, Op. 41
The 'Grande Sonate' in E major, Op. 41, composed 1816. Moscheles's most ambitious solo piano work of the early period, combining Classical formal rigour with a lyricism and technical ambition that point toward Romanticism. The E major key gives it a luminous, open character, and the writing exploits the full range of the early 19th-century fortepiano with great imagination. One of the most substantial German piano sonatas between Beethoven's late works and Schubert's three final sonatas.
