Piano Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major, Op. 56
Piano Concerto No. 2 in E♭ major, Op. 56, composed 1820. Moscheles's second concerto shows a bolder orchestration and more developed formal architecture than the First, while retaining the brilliant piano writing and lyrical charm that characterised his concert style. The E♭ major key — the key of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto — suggests an ambitious scope, though Moscheles's language remains fundamentally Classical in its clarity and balance. A rewarding concert work of the Hummel era.
