Piano Concerto No. 6 in B-flat major, Op. 90, 'Fantastique'
Piano Concerto No. 6 in B♭ major, Op. 90, nicknamed 'Fantastique', composed 1833 and one of the most progressive works of its time. The nickname reflects the freer formal approach and more adventurous harmonic language compared with Moscheles's earlier concertos: the 'Fantastique' moves between episodes with a dreamlike quality that anticipates the Lisztian fantasy-concerto of the 1840s. At the time of its composition it was considered harmonically daring, and Mendelssohn — Moscheles's most celebrated pupil — admired it greatly. The Hyperion recordings have done much to restore all three late concertos to the repertoire.
