Sonate mélancolique in F-sharp minor, Op. 49
The 'Sonate mélancolique' in F♯ minor, Op. 49, composed 1814. Moscheles's most personal and introspective piano sonata, the title indicating a predominantly reflective and melancholic character throughout. The F♯ minor key — remote, introspective, associated with the 'dark' regions of the keyboard — is carefully chosen. Compared with the Grand Sonata Op. 41, this work is more inward and less publicly brilliant, anticipating the intimate lyricism of Schubert's late style. Among the finest of Moscheles's solo piano works.
