Chorale Preludes

by Johann Pachelbel

Composed 1685–1706
Works 20

Pachelbel composed over 100 chorale preludes for liturgical organ use, making him the most important chorale prelude composer between Scheidt and Bach. His characteristic technique of presenting the chorale melody in long notes in one voice while surrounding it with imitative counterpoint derived from the chorale became the model Bach absorbed and perfected. This collection presents 20 representative settings of the most frequently performed chorales.
