Histoire du Tango

History of the Tango — four movements for flute and guitar (1986), each evoking a different era of the tango: Bordel 1900 (brothel tango), Café 1930 (the romantic orchestral era), Nightclub 1960 (the jazz-inflected nuevo tango), and Concert d'aujourd'hui (the tango as concert music). The work traces the genre's social and artistic journey from its origins in Buenos Aires's red-light districts to the concert hall.
