Concerto pour deux pianos en re mineur, FP 61
Concerto for two pianos and orchestra in D minor, composed in the summer of 1932. One of Poulenc's most immediately popular works: the first movement's propulsive energy, the central Larghetto's ethereal beauty — haunted by echoes of Mozart and Balinese gamelan music Poulenc had heard at the 1931 Colonial Exposition — and the finale's exhilarating drive make it a paradigm of the interwar French neoclassical concerto. The dialogue between the two pianos is always witty and perfectly balanced.
