Concerto pour piano en ut diese mineur, FP 146
Piano Concerto in C-sharp minor, composed in 1949 on commission from the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The last of Poulenc's concertos, it is more introverted and harmonically complex than the two-piano work of 1932. The Allegretto opening sets a tone of ambiguous, slightly restless wit; the Andante con moto is lyrical and searching; the finale has the characteristic Poulenc blend of dancing energy and underlying melancholy. Poulenc premiered it himself with Charles Munch and the BSO in January 1950.
