Gnossiennes

Seven character pieces composed between 1889 and 1897. Like the Gymnopédies, they are in unmeasured notation (no barlines in some versions) and carry cryptic, ironic performance directions rather than conventional tempo markings. Nos. 1–3 were published in 1893; Nos. 4–7 appeared posthumously.
