5 Klavierstücke (Five Piano Pieces), Op. 23
Five piano pieces composed 1920–23. A transitional set of the highest importance: the first four pieces are freely atonal, but the fifth — a Walzer — is Schoenberg's first complete twelve-tone work, using a single row throughout. The entire set therefore documents the invention of twelve-tone technique in real time. No. 5 (Walzer) is the most frequently performed movement. Duration approximately 16–18 minutes.
