Children's Notebook, Op. 69
Seven pieces for piano composed in 1944–45 for Shostakovich's young daughter Galina as she began piano lessons. March, Waltz, The Bear, Merry Tale, Sad Tale, Clockwork Doll, and Birthday (added in 1945 as a birthday gift). Originally envisioned as a cycle of 24 pieces in all keys; only seven were completed. Deceptively simple in technique but rich in character, these are among Shostakovich's most charming works. First performed at a children's concert in Moscow, December 1945.
