6 Characteristic Pieces, Op. 1
Smetana's first published opus, six character pieces for piano composed 1847–48. Each piece has a descriptive German title evoking a mood or figure: In the Forest, Rising Passion, The Shepherdess, Longing, The Warrior, Despair. They show the influence of Schumann and Liszt and remain among the most approachable of Smetana's early piano works.
