Danzas fantasticas, Op. 22
Three pieces for piano solo composed in August 1919, each subtitled from a passage of Jose Mas's novel 'La Copla': Exaltacion, Ensuenos, and Orgia. Turina subsequently orchestrated the work, and the orchestral version became one of his most performed pieces. The piano original, however, is compact and idiomatic: No. 1 Exaltacion is fierce and rhythmically driven; No. 2 Ensuenos is dreamy and impressionistic; No. 3 Orgia is a whirling, climactic finale. All three draw on Andalusian dance rhythms and modal colour.
