Sanlucar de Barrameda (Sonata pintoresca), Op. 24
Sonata pintoresca (picturesque sonata) for piano solo in four movements, composed c. 1922. Named for the Andalusian coastal town at the mouth of the Guadalquivir river, it is one of Turina's most atmospheric and evocative works. Each movement paints a vignette of the town: the castle tower, the promenade, the beach, and the fishermen at the landing of Bajo de Guia. The musical language is gently impressionistic, indebted to Debussy and Faure, though the Spanish colour is unmistakable throughout.
