Cirandas

Sixteen piano pieces composed in 1926, each based on a Brazilian children's folk song (ciranda). A ciranda is a traditional round dance-song, and the sixteen cirandas span a wide range of character and difficulty, from simple and folk-like to harmonically intricate and technically demanding. The titles, drawn directly from the song names, include Terezinha de Jesus, O Cravo Brigou com a Rosa, Passa Passa Gaviao, O Pintor de Cannahy, A Canoa Virou, and others. Together they form one of the most substantial and representative sets of Brazilian nationalist piano pieces.
