Eight character pieces for solo piano composed in 1918, each depicting a different doll: Branquinha (celluloid), Moreninha (wooden), Caboclinha (rubber), Mulatinha (composition), Negrinhas (bisque), Pobrezinha (papier-mache), O Polichinelo (Punchinello / Punch), and A Bruxa (the witch). The suite is one of the most colourful and immediately engaging works in the Brazilian piano repertoire. O Polichinelo, with its percussive staccato and comic energy, is among the most frequently performed of all Villa-Lobos's piano pieces.
