Biography
A leading figure of American post-Minimalism who moved beyond strict repetition toward a more harmonically dynamic and emotionally expressive style. His piano works include China Gates, Phrygian Gates, and the Grand Pianola Music (for two pianos and orchestra). His operas Nixon in China and Doctor Atomic are landmarks of American music theater.
