Biography
A visionary French organist-composer killed in action at 29 during World War II, Alain left a compact but intensely original body of organ works that blend modal harmony, rhythmic vitality, and exotic influences. His Litanies (1937) — a relentless, incantatory build to a shattering climax — and Trois Danses (1937–39) are among the most frequently performed 20th-century organ works. His sister Marie-Claire Alain became one of the foremost organists of the century, championing his music worldwide.
